Self-branding

Self-branding is one of important aspects that needs to be considered by all academics or researchers. Who are you? What you do? What do you want people to know what you do? How do you give evidences to all things that you do/want others to know about it?

Those are among questions that will help us define ourselves particularly online. Try to Google your own name and see what you get. Is it your Facebook account? Try to look for image. What kind of photos appear that relate to your name?

It is undeniable that the use of social media sometimes can shape our identities - whether you realize it or not; whether you plan it or not. Apart from Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest of Instagram - many academics also have a tendency to shape their online identities via platforms like Google Scholar, LinkedIn, ResearchGates, Academia or even Mendeley. These platforms give you space to share your work and showcase your expertise. I have lots of students who like to surf through Academia to get full text of journal articles. Some of them use Google Scholar alerts. They also use Mendeley to archive all the articles they read and even share their libraries with others.

So many ways to get connected, so many means to share things!
I would like to thank everybody who attended today's session on online visibility. Hope that my little sharing benefits everyone! ^____^

This is a good effort Dr Fariza. Keep it up!
I hope you've also included the relevance of Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) in your session. Although the Internet or being visible online may define us, we should always be alert and maintain the safety and security of our personal data.
All the best Dr!

Salam Da,

Today's workshop focused merely on official platforms for academics i.e Google Scholar, LinkedIn, ResearchGates, Academia, Scopus ID, ORCID, and ISI ResearcherID and not on other social media like FB, IG or Twitter through which people share more about their personal life. We did talk about the copyright issues related to materials shared via these platforms though. I also touched on the 'long tail' aspect and the fact that the items in the 'long tail' of your personal brand will NEVER go away so it is crucial that we are aware of those things that might impact our personal as well as professional identities. Anyway, thanks for the reminder though :)))

W'salam Za 😊
I see. So you focused from the academic perspective and the 'long tail' being one's academic and professional digital footprint ya.
Good one!👍
May you have many more fruitful session like this in the future 😊
