What does it mean to be a 21st Century Educators? Does it merely involve the integration of technology into your teaching and learning? What about teachers' roles concerning the 4th Industrial Revolution demands? How can an educator provide his/her service to inculcate top skills needed in the 21st Century? There is a lot of paradigm shift that has to take place when we talk about this topic. I am grateful to have had a chance to dig into the topics during our face-to-face sessions. Participants were 20 educators from MARA institutions, teaching various subjects specifically related to TVET discipline. When you have active participants, the atmosphere will automatically become more alive thus, helps to indulge in the discussion more effectively. Congratulations to all the participants for showing great interest and commitment throughout the sessions!

As time was so limited, everything was squeezed in. Selamat berkarya dan terus berpegang kepada prinsip bahawa it is about students' learning, not lecturers' teaching! Sedikit feedback daripada peserta kursus. Thanks semua. Jemputan daripada sifu saya PM Azidah Abu Ziden, Timbalan Pengarah aka mak tiri dari Pusat Pembangunan Kecemerlangan Akademik atau The Centre for Development of Academic Excellence (CDAE) USM. Lalu ayuh, kita sama-sama mencuba something new and fresh dan jangan takut untuk mencubanya bersama kumpulan pelajar anda.
Semoga ada manfaatnya buat semua :) I was invited to present a keynote speech for 2020 IEEE Conference on e-Learning, e-Management and e-Services (IC3e2020) that took place on 17th November 2020. Redesigning a Meaningful Online Learning for Learners: Where Do We Start and Where Do We Go? - that was the title of my presentation. Everybody is talking about shifting teaching to online mode but little that we know that the shift needs a planned modification, not only related to the content delivery alone. Rather, it involves more aspects - students' actual needs and capacity (cognitive as well as their technology affordances), learning experiences to suit the objectives, a choreography of activities so as to ensure active learning to take place and not forgotten, the aspect of assessment. I also highlighted the importance of identifying the root of the problem that is to be addressed by using a performance discrepancy analysis. This is a core approach taken by all instructional designers. Without understanding the actual cause of students' performance, we will never be able to provide them a remedy. Being an educator is not easy huh, but if you love your profession, I bet this process will give you abundance of blissful satisfaction as you know what you are doing, and why you choose to do it :) My heartfelt thanks to Assoc Prof Dr Sian Lun Lau for the invitation!
Alhamdulillah, another sharing session took place via Microsoft Teams. Thanks to my fellow colleagues from the Faculty of Information Science & Technology for joining me in this session!
In this new normal era, educators have a lot to catch up; from creating and curating learning materials, designing learning activities, disseminating or providing sufficient learning material to students, to planning and assessing learning activities. I was invited to an online sharing session Assessment by HITeL UiTM Perak to talk about Tips and Tools for Online. In this session, I had additional material that focused on more tips on how to plan and design learning assessment effectively. Apparently, the tips are not something new. However, the stress is on how educators align the learning outcomes with the assessments that they plan. In this era, where everything is conducted via online, we need to consider variation in the level of internet access among our students as well. Therefore, negotiation and flexibility come into place here. Do not be too rigid - make sure that the time given to students to complete the tasks is achievable. Make sure to spare additional time if needed so that all we get from students are something that they produced with a full effort and satisfaction. I also talked about alternative assessment as an alternative :) I also shared the actual evidence of how I conducted an alternative assessment with my students. What I like most about this kind of assessment is that is allows me to evaluate my students' capacity more holistically. Through a single project given, the evaluation is not focused on what they had learned alone, rather, more importantly, what they can do, team work and collaborative skills, leadership, management, diligence as well as resilience ( just to name a few). Friends, please also remember to provide a scaffolding support to your students. If you expect them to produce an assignment / task, give them the rubrics that you would use to score their work. Students will appreciate the rubrics as it will help them to focus on the elements in the rubrics and in other words, it will help them to be more focused and how to fulfil the expectation. Every assignment has to come with a clear instruction and details about what will be assessed. Last but not least, my heartfelt thanks to UiTM Perak for this invitation :)
Taken place at Putra Business School UPM, the workshop was attended by officers from the Ministry of Information, Bangladesh. This time around, I was invited to conduct a workshop on Citizen Journalism - an interesting new topic! We had a good time exploring issues related to social media journalism, particularly on citizen journalism. I also learned a lot about citizen journalism in Bangladesh as well as other stories from policies, up to political matter. As we had so many topics to be covered, three day workshop was not enough. Nonetheless, I am grateful and feel proud to see their efforts to produce a short video by just using mobile apps (Animoto and FilmoraGo). Well, some people might underestimate the power of mobile version of video editor, but FilmoraGo and Animoto prove that the perception is totally wrong. For those who are always on the go, but love to share things on their social media, these easy apps would be suitable options. An example of a short video created using Animoto: As for graphic design, Canva will always be my first choice. Comes in web and mobile apps versions, Canva will never disappoint you! Only with few clicks, your graphic is ready to be shared as it allows you to download the output in jpeg and other formats. Speaking about ethics in citizen journalism, there are fews aspects that need to be considered. If you ever shared any news, information or views on your social media, you are considered as citizen journalists! So, as a journalist, there must be ethics that you should follow so as to create a harmonious and constructive sharing environment online. My heartfelt thanks to Putra Business School for this invitation. I do learn a lot myself from conducting this workshop, and also through sharing information with these great guys! Thanks everyone for your attention and determination to complete the training days. I do hope you enjoyed your training as well as your visits! Till then, thanks! Above: Never endiing story, heheheh!
